Cornwood (453/4) beat Plympton (251/12) by 202 runs.
The performance was every bit as emphatic as the scores suggest. Cornwood were on it from ball one and did not let up throughout; I was really pleased with how the lads enjoyed the game, did a professional job, and were still able to remain respectful at all times (even with a reminder or two from me!).
Plympton’s young skipper won the toss and chose to bat. Noah G struck in the first over and would go on to get three wickets, all clean bowled – Superb from Noah. AJ, making his league debut, took a wicket with his second ball – Making cricket look easy! He didn’t stop there as he got a second scalp, both clean bowled, to finish 2-4… He also got himself a nice run out to boot.
Harvey bowled well without getting a wicket, but only went for 6 runs. Stanley bowled leg-spin as it became apparent that Plympton would be unlikely to be able to deal with his pace deliveries; he finished 1-15, another wicket out bowled. Mason and Eoin also got a wicket each, and again both were out bowled as they finished 1-19 and 1-11 respectively. Eoin and Mason also got a run out each and the superb performance with the ball over twenty overs resulted in Plympton finishing on 251 runs.
Our first pair, Mason and AJ, got us to within one run of the target in their five overs thanks to a superb fifty partnership. AJ scored a boundary with his first ever ball faced in league cricket… He got out caught playing a shot – Nothing wrong with that, but will be disappointed with his run out as excitement go the better of him going for a second run that wasn’t there. At the other end Mason was superb; he scored two brilliant boundaries as he racked up 18 runs. In next were Noah G and Harvey and these boys put on 61 for their five overs. Harvey played his part well, not wsasting any deliveries (no dot balls at all) and rotating the strike. Noah played his usual mix of expressive shots and scored a chanceless 34 runs with six boundaries included. Cornwood 297/2 at the half way mark and miles ahead.
In next came Eoin and James; they would add 43 to the total. James took a few balls to get going and was bowled out in the second over; however, he soon started hitting ones and twos and rotated the strike well. Eoin also took a few balls to get to grips with the bowling but then hit some fluency as he scored 29 with 6 fours in his knock. Cornwood were now 354/3 and cruising to victory.
Then came something quite remarkable as Stanley and Tommy put on 104 runs in their five overs! Tom played a very mature innings scoring 20 from just 8 balls – A great knock in itself. However, at the other end Stanley was doing something very special. Stan scored 78 runs from just twenty balls… And that included three dot balls! Stanley was controlled but rampant as he dispatched 5 fours and a ridiculous 9 sixes. His fifty came off just eleven balls!!!!! He finished 78 from twenty balls in an innings which I will certainly never forget. The kids can learn a lot by watching Stanley; his cricketing mind is something to behold and he will only improve those around him. Stan also skippered this evening and he chose the batting pairs with no input from me… He did a very very good job of it too!
So… A superb win for Cornwood on a record breaking night.
Up the Wood!!!
