Match Report: U11’s Yelverton vs CCC

Yelverton v Cornwood 10th May 2021

Match Report

It was a chilly evening up at Yelverton for U11s first game of the season; a brief heavy shower also livened things up but in truth, Cornwood were in control from ball one.

Asked to field first skipper Oliver Offer mixed up the bowling well in one over spells. Eoin Hewitt was first to strike as he bowled Will in the fourth over and Neel Shivane cleaned up Amir in the next to get Cornwood off to a lovely start.  The captain brought himself on next and grabbed a double-wicket maiden in his first over with a c&b and another bowled out.  This was starting to feel like carnage and at this point Charlie Martyn was tossed the ball…  Three wickets in the first four balls for Charlie did untold damage and a triple-wicket maiden was his reward.

Yelverton’s Toby hit a couple of fours to give the home crowd some cheer but Shamik clean bowled him to put another nail in the Yelverton coffin… A few balls later Eoin took another scalp with a sharp run out which was soon followed by Oliver’s third scalp with another caught & bowled effort (Well done skipper!).  Charlie came back to bowl the final over and had another wicket maiden as he finished with figures of 4 for 5 with two maidens.  Zac Spencer kept wicket and did a fantastic job with very little going past him despite the pace of the Cornwood attack; even more impressive when you consider he had never seen a pair of keeper gloves until fifteen minutes before kick off!  Mason Morrish bowled a lovely economical spell and was unlucky not to get one, and Roo Vacquier showed huge improvement in his spell which put to bed the nerves he was feeling coming into the game.  The fielding was excellent throughout, lots of fielding in pairs, good communication and backing up – Well done team!

Yelverton ended on 192.

Ace batsmen Neel and Shamik opened the reply and did very well considering a large number of deliveries were unhittable due to being very wide.  Neel ended on 8 and Shamik on 11 as they put together a 35 run partnership.

Oliver and Roo batted next with the skipper keen to help newcomer Roo in his first partnership.  Roo got hit first ball by a nasty delivery and was then bowled twice, it would have been easy to fall apart but he recovered and scored eight runs including a lovely four through square leg.  At the other end Oliver was imperious hitting two lovely drives for four in his innings of 11 not out.  The partnership was worth 9 in the end but was far better than the stats show.

Cousins Eoin and Charlie were up next and hungry for runs.  Eoin hit three boundaries through the leg side as he punished anything on his pads and the pair put on 26 together.  Impressive running between the wickets with this pair as they bumped & ran singles and ran a three thanks to an overthrow and some alert calling.

With victory almost assured Zac and Mason strode to the crease to face some bowling which was again very wide at times.  Zac hit a lovely four but ended up getting out twice to a couple of decent deliveries, Mason hit some nice strokes and the boys ran very well together.  The partnership was worth 15 in the end.

Cornwood finished on 289-4 and won handsomely by 97 runs.
