Feels like it’s been a long time coming, but summer is now almost upon us, and a full Devon Cricket League season kicks off on Saturday 7th May.
Our 1st XI, under the returning captaincy of homegrown player Elliott Staddon, start their Premier Division campaign with a home fixture against local rivals Plymouth CC. In addition to our Indian overseas player/coach Jay Bista who joins us just before the first league match, we also welcome two new players to Cornwood CC this season; Harry Woolway joins us after moving to the area to take up a teaching post. Harry has played Premier grade cricket in Somerset previously. We also welcome promising young player Finn Torley, who joins us from Ivybridge CC.
Similarly our 2nd XI team have a new captain, Robin Dart, a player who started out as a Cornwood Colt. The 2’s start off the season with an away trip to Kingsbridge 1st XI.
The 3rds will be under the new leadership of Josh Wood and they also face an away match at the Babbacombe bowl.
Our promotion winning 4th XI, with Dave Tracey continuing at the helm, will have the challenge of balancing the team to provide playing opportunities for both the experienced older players and talented younger players looking to get their first exposure to senior cricket. The 4ths start out on the top pitch where they entertain Plympton 3rd XI.
Big congratulations go out to our new club skipper for 2022, Elliot Staddon who, along with first team colleague and now established Devon player Matt Skeemer, made his full county debut on Sun 10th April in a friendly match against Exeter University at Sidmouth. Both Cornwood players made significant contributions for Devon, with Elliott hitting 40 runs in a power batting demonstration which yielded three 6’s as Devon started to push the total along. Devon posted a big score which proved too many for the Univ lads.
Staddon opened the bowling and took the wicket of the Uni’s opening batsman, before Matt Skeemer was brought into the attack and he ripped through the Uni middle and lower order taking five wickets for not very many. It’s fantastic to see our home grown players making telling contributions on the county stage. We hope these performances will open the
door for further appearances throughout the season.
Cornwood’s men players train on Tuesday and often Thursday evenings throughout the summer, from 6.00pm. With four teams we are able to offer plenty of playing opportunities. Our facilities are amongst the best in the county, so if you’re new to the area or perhaps thinking of getting back into cricket this summer, make your way along to training.
As always, we are very keen to welcome new faces this season.

Under the captaincy of Hannah Bagshaw Bale, Cornwood Ladies have already started their Devon Womens League Season with a few Super 8’s fixtures in April. This article is written before the matches have taken place so cannot comment on the results.
Our ladies have been training at Ivybridge Community College since January and have also been playing in an indoor league competition which they managed to win thanks to some great performances on finals day. This season we will be running both hardball and softball teams, with both competing in Devon League competitions. The softball option allows new lady players to join and participate in a competitive environment without feeling pressured straight into hardball cricket. Whilst we have attracted several new lady players recently, we can certainly accommodate a few more. Girls from Yr8 upwards and all ladies are welcome to come along and give it a go. Training will be pitched at the right level for the new players.
If you think you may fancy giving it a try, then get along to training evenings on Monday evenings at the club for a 6pm start, or email us at email@example.com for more details.
It’s Cornwood’s Ladies Day on Sunday 15th May when our senior ladies will be involved in two Super 8s matches whilst our Girls Under 11 and Under 13 teams will be participating in festivals on the top pitch. Come along and give them all your support.
Colts cricket continues to gain momentum at Cornwood and once again we will be running six different age group teams this season. With so many teams we are very keen to introduce more children to cricket, so if your child is looking for a summer sporting activity, look no further. We are particularly thrilled this year to be increasing the number of our girls sides with both Under 11 and Under 13 teams competing in a newly formed county competition.
Girls up to Yr 8 age group are encouraged to just come along to training on Friday evenings and give cricket a try. If you’d like to know more then please contact our junior colts coordinator Andy Rickard: firstname.lastname@example.org Coaching sessions for our Acorns (young cricketers from 4 yrs upwards) have already started and will run on Friday evenings from 5pm until 6pm. throughout the summer term. Our ECB All Stars ( 5 to 8 yr olds) and Dynamos (8 to 11 yr olds) programmes start on Thurs 19th and Fri 20th May respectively.
There are still a few spaces available but not many, so if youre interested in getting your child on board, best to get registering NOW. Load this link into your web browser, add your post code and the Cornwood CC programmes should appear. Just follow the on screen prompts to register.
https://www.ecb.co.uk/play/all-stars Residents of the local community are welcome to join as social members ( at a very low rate) and enjoy the facilities at the club, socialising with friends, and sampling the spectacle of top level Devon cricket. This year the bar is back open and we will have a fantastic new look hospitality set up, providing delicious hot and cold snacks throughout the summer months, everything under one roof. Our rates are certainly amongst the lowest in the county, and our facilities amongst the best, so why not make the most of Cornwood CC. Its on your doorstep!
