Cornwood Under 11 faced Plymouth Devonport in the West Devon Cup Quarter Final on 23rd June. With a poor weather forecast in place both teams were pleased to arrive to an overcast but warm and dry evening. Plymouth won the toss and asked Cornwood to bat first.
Worrying signs for Cornwood as Tommy was bowled first ball by Miller but fortunately, this was not a sign of things to come. Tommy (9) and Oscar (10) rallied to produce a partnership worth 23 and Cornwood were off and running. Next in were Noah G and AJ; Noah was in the mood as he immediately stuck into the Plymouth bowling, scoring 15 from the first over. AJ didn’t see much of the strike and was unfortunate to be caught behind in the second over; but Noah continued his attack finishing on 30 not out having hit 6 fours – The partnership worth 38 in total.
Imogen and Emily were next in and were the first partnership to not lose a wicket. Emily played some nicely timed shots to finish on four and this partnership contributed 23 runs in total. Mason and Marriot were next in and despite not hitting any boundaries, they kept the score board ticking over nicely. A partnership of 24 was delivered with Mason on 9 and Marriot on 6. Last in were Noah H and Eoin. Eoin got off to a quick start with two boundaries in the first over; Noah hit a lovely four at the other end and Eoin added a couple more boundaries. The pair put on 43 with Eoin on 22 and Noah on 9. Cornwood finished on 351/2 – Losing only two wickets was possibly crucial at this point.
Plymouths reply started in blistering fashion as Immy and Miller scored 56 runs from the first four overs; it was looking like 351 may not be enough for Cornwood at this point. However, a reduction in batting fire power and some smart bowling and fielding soon put pay to any hopes of a Plymouth victory.
Imogen grabbed the first wicket for Cornwood as Mason took a smart grab behind the stumps. In the next over, Noah H bowled Lucy and two overs later there was carnage as three wickets fell. Noah G was the bowler and got his first wicket caught by Eoin; in the next ball Immy looped one high in the air and Emily took a lovely catch. There was no hat trick for Noah this time but a run out next ball courtesy of AJ – Lovely stuff in the field!
A few overs later Tommy got in on the act with another run out before “Golden Arm” Oscar got yet another wicket as he bowled Isis. Marriott’s turn next as Noah G took a lovely catch behind the stumps to unleash the famous Marriott smile once again. There was still time for two more wickets as Noah H got in on the act with a smart run out before Mason finished things up by bowling out Kat with a spinning delivery.
Credit to our umpires and opponents who allowed the game to finish despite worsening weather and rain in their last six overs or so. Neither team wanted to replay the match so it was great news that we could finish it up on the night.
Cornwood progress to the Semi Finals!
Up the Wood!
