Cornwood U11 v Whitchurch U11 – Friendly Fixture – 1st June 2022

Cornwood (345/4) beat Whitchurch (256/9) by 89 runs

Cornwood did a great job on a warm Wednesday evening by beating a Whitchurch team who have won their first four league games.

The evening didn’t start well for the hosts… Joe was withdrawn an hour before the game due to injury and, en-route, Eoin’s mum got a puncture leaving him stranded eight miles from the ground. Up stepped Lennon (Marriot’s older brother) to help us out and Mason’s dad heroically drove off to collect Eoin. The drama wasn’t over though as Bertie no-showed as his mum was told the game was off; when he got the SOS Bertie was down at The Wood within minutes… So we had eight (somehow!)

Captain Mason won the toss and eventually decided to bat first as he only had six players at the time! A special moment for The Way Family as brothers Lennon and Marriot opened the batting for Cornwood; the brothers would put on a fine 51 partnership from their five overs with Marriot on 9 and Lennon on 18. Up next to bat were Stanley and Emily; they put on 47 in a fine partnership with Stanley getting 31 and Emily 9 (including her first ever boundaries as she hit two fine fours).

Mason and Oscar EH were in next; Oscar hit his first boundary as he scored seven and Mason hit a fine 24 with a couple of sumptuous shots through point included in his innings. Last on were Eoin and Bertie who scored 12 and 6 respectively to give Cornwood an excellent total of 345 for the loss of four wickets.

The tone of the bowling performance was set from the first over as skipper Mason clean bowled Alex with his second ball. Mason also bowled Oscar and finished 2-14 from his three overs which were full of pace. Bertie bowled superbly to concede just two runs from two overs including a first ever maiden in hardball for the young man. Oscar EH also bowled brilliantly and grabbed himself a double-wicket maiden!!! 2-4 for Oscar who was inspired.

Lennon bowled some elaborate spin and got himself one wicket; Stanley did the same and castled Sam, knocking his middle stump out of the ground. Eoin grabbed two late wickets, both bowled, and Mason took a sharp run-out. A good performance with the ball meant Cornwood eased to the win by 89 runs.

Top Score – Stanley – 32
Best Bowling – Oscar EH – 2-4
